| Mug of the Moment |
Year: 2003
Month: October
Mug: David Blaine
Reason: For going from hero to zero in under 44 days. |

David Blaine's transformation from wannabe showman to internationally renowned illusionist could be compared to a mega magic trick many an aspiring celebrity wouldn't mind having turned on them.
If there is a flip side to that coin though his latest stunt in the heart of London could be it.
Before his hunger stunt not a single bad word had been said of the talented and well-mannered illusionist but it seems as though his highly controversial spectacle above the Thames has sent him back to zero from hero in the minds of many.

Blaine gives his fans a weak wave from his box above the Thames. |
His hunger stunt has touched every emotion the human body has to offer, curiosity, bewilderment, amazement, pity, anger, fury and resentment.
All sorts of people from fans to locals, tourists and celebrities have paid a visit to the site where the glass box that houses David Blaine hangs close to Tower Bridge.
His fans seem to still love him and probably rate him even more for his latest stunt, the locals and tourists gather around with a bewildering look on their face at the spectacle before them. But an ever-increasing number of people have showed up at the site to launch attacks on the magician and his apparatus of illusion.
His stunt has been criticised by major charitable organisations who with their limited resources try their best to help children in the third world that face death due to starvation.
A group of aid activists have even gone so far as to stage their own hunger strike in protest of Blaine's stunt. The group of activists from CAFOD (Catholic bishops of England and Wales) are hoping to borrow some of the media attention to highlight the fact that millions of people around the world don't have the choice.
Even the Guiness book of records have slung some mud Blaine's way and said they do not support his feat and the stunt will not be eligible for entry into their prestigious book.
Since entering the box David Blaine has had all sorts of insults and objects hurled towards him and his glass box from the modest packet of half finished fish and chips, to golf balls, laser pointers and one industrious protestor even tried to severe his water pipe.
The attacks and insults have become so frequent and ever more daring that the police have had to be called in to keep the peace and protect the slowly dying human being that so many people want to do damage to.
And the police are non too happy about having to mind the area when
they are already overstretched as it is and have indicated that the
millionaire illusionist may have to pick up the tab for the policing.
It seems the man who used to put so many smiles on so many faces is now provoking frowns and fury.
Blaine's refreshing style of street magic pumped some life back into magic and people couldn't get enough of his amazing tricks including mind boggling feats of human elevation.
However, the street magic tricks were just an appetiser of what was to come from the New Yorker, who had major plans and ambitions just waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting audience.
In 1999, he was buried alive for one week beneath a Plexiglas tank filled with 4000 pounds of water.
In 2000, he spent 61 hours and 40 minutes standing encased in a 6-tonne block of ice in New York's Times Square.
In 2002, he stood on a 105 feet tall, 22-inch wide pillar for 35 hours with no water, food, or sleep.
Will his 2003 hunger stunt mark the end of a highly successful career
for David Blaine, at least in the eyes of the British public? We will
soon find out but one thing's for sure, the man has lost many fans
and gained many enemies so I suppose you can safely say that this
stunt in particular back fired on him.
For that we have chosen to make him the mug of the moment but who knows the talented illusionist may yet redeem himself in the eyes of the British public.
