The Liberal Democrats are?

When the Liberal Democrats snatched Brent East from under the nose of the Labour party the euphoria that followed led the Lib Dems leader Charles Kennedy to proclaim that he wants his party to become the real opposition to the government in the run up to the next general election. Are the Lib Dems trying to run before they can walk or has the Brent East victory jumped them right over the heads of the bewildered Tories and on course to bring Labour to their knees?

The Libdems are the only real political party on the scene, upholding parliamentary democracy and mature debate. Of course, this does not always equate to entertainment, and I hardly think 'jazzing up' American style would benefit their strategy, or British politics generally! If anything is to be learnt from the last few years, it is that America's example is not one to be embraced uncritically... If the Libdems' image leaves something to be desired, perhaps it's because -unlike Labour and the Conservatives- they do not operate as a private firm and attach less importance to marketing and spin, and more to the issues. This party is a growing force in post-modern Britain, as its steady growth demonstrates -and its capacity to win seats from both the Tories and Labour. It's not about 'right' or 'left', but whether we want a functioning political society, or to follow the path across the Pond to one of vegged-up 'citizens' and compliant consumers in the 'new global order'.

You're right Zara, they do remind me of old Labour back in the Kinnock days. Bleeding heart liberals brace yourself for the throngs of power after the next election.

They're just the YELLOW party... Need a spin doctor badly. On a slightly more postive note, They also remind me of the labor party, when kinnock was in it, and we all thought they'd never get in. So if the libdems, kick out all the goofy, get a revamp & jazz up 'American Style' they'll be in a stronger position than the tories easily, people like dreamers with vision not muddle !

Don't let the liberal democrats fool you into thinking they are a real political party. They are just in the house of commons to make up the numbers and keep the tories on their toes.
