Plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery as we now
know it, is rapidly becoming the norm thing to do when we are not
happy with a certain piece of flesh on our body. We want to know what
your views are on this edgy new craze. |

It is estimated that over £200 million was spent in the UK alone on cosmetic surgery. With such a booming industry new clinics are opening rapidly.
Procedures range from a speedy injection to eradicate any unwanted frown lines to breast enlargements, facelifts, skin peels and eye reshaping. Costs vary from clinic to clinic and for different treatments, but on average a woman would need to shell out around £3000 for a new pair of knockers.
With over 15,000 women opting to go under the knife each year just to achieve their idea of mammary perfection it is little wonder that this industries image has shifted from medical to an extreme form of retail therapy.
Are we rapidly becoming a nation of Frankenstein’s monsters? Will we endure anything in the futile pursuit for perfection? Lets remember that when you under go cosmetic surgery there is a fair amount of pain involved and you need to recover from the surgery in the same way as you would if you had had your appendix out.
What is it that drives people to suffer physical pain so that they look more beautiful? Is it because people suffer so badly from low self-esteem, due to decades of glossy adverts and fashion mags’ promoting the ‘perfect’ human specimen? Everyone is aware of the link between eating disorders and fashion models, could this be a result of peoples insecurity that is confounded by the media and the modern world. Is plastic surgery the next step after buying too many pairs of shoes?
The clinics that sell this dream are becoming more and more common, they advertise in fashion magazines and now run TV ads. Some clinics even send reps to your home that will give you the once over and sell you treatments that think you need done.
There are also package tours abroad that tie in a holiday with a quick nose job, all inclusive of course. These types of clinics operate in way that is not in keeping with the medical profession, they are after all making money and are not doing these operations on the basis of medical need. Cosmetic surgery is needed for individuals that have medical problems, which are affecting their lives, but for the vast majority it boils down to vanity.
People need to remember that it is not as simple as a quick trip to get your nails done. However, it is very easy for me to sit and wonder why people do it and I am sure that no-one goes into without thinking after all it doesn’t come cheap.
Maybe I will change my mind once I start seeing unsightly laughter lines coursing across my face but I hope that I will have more important things to think about, also I am far too much of a coward to let someone near me with a scalpel unless absolutely necessary. |
