It’s official, here in the UK we absolutely love our mobile phones. The wide spread use of mobile phones is a brand new phenomenon and almost half the UK population now own one.
Things have come a long way since the days of the big black brick that people used to struggle to fit into their biggest jacket pocket. These days they come so small that even a baby could fit one into his or her smallest pocket.
We love our mobiles so much that nearly half the population now owns one and many of us probably couldn’t do without one. The days of using a mobile phone for business or work alone are long gone, they are now the ultimate fashion accessory and are used by people of all ages.
The evidence also shows that the popularity of the mobile is due to continue rising as mobile phone companies upgrade their networks for more capacity, pay huge sums for next generation 3G operating licenses and design new phones with more and more cool features like the ability to send and receive email, faxes, music and even video.
The proliferation of mobile phones especially among the young has caused some concern. Mobile phone companies have constantly reiterated that there is no scientific proof that says using a mobile could damage our health despite the fact that several people have come forward with claims that heavy use of their phone has done damage to their health.
Some people have claimed that prolonged use of their mobile has left them with hearing problems, dizziness and even cancerous tumors. These are very serious allegations and the government has acknowledged that by launching the task force to investigate.
Mobile phone companies are highly sensitive about any talk of health risks associated with using their products, after all, mobile phones are one of the best selling communication products in the world and generates Billions of Dollars in global sales. The fact of the matter is that everything in life has its risks, it’s just a question of whether the risk is worth it.
Understanding how the mobile phone works is the first step to accessing the risks and knowing how to minimise the risks are vital for people that use their phone a lot.
Mobile phones send and receive signals using electromagnetic waves also known as electromagnetic radiation. Radiation doesn’t sound very good does it? But don’t be alarmed because we are constantly exposed to radiation every day by the sun and we see using that part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which our eyes can detect.
This doesn’t mean that heavy exposure to electromagnetic radiation is okay because prolonged exposure to the sun has been linked to skin cancer and other biological disorders. Despite the results of the governments task force inquiry the sensible thing to do is moderate the use of your mobile phone.
Use text messaging and email whenever you can, don’t use your mobile
when driving and if you have to speak on the phone for a long time
try and use a hands free kit and don’t position the phone too close
to your ear. |
